Getting started

Sign up and set up your account

Create your free MakeHay account, then answer a few short setup questions about your work, services, follow-ups and request form.

Signing up creates your company in MakeHay. A short setup follows, one question per screen, and you can skip any part of it.

Create your account

  1. Step 1: On makehay.io, click Start free.
  2. Step 2: Enter your Company name, Your name, Email and a Password of at least 8 characters.
  3. Step 3: If another business referred you, enter their code in Referral code (optional).
  4. Step 4: Click Create free account. Setup opens next.

Tip: If you see Continue with Google, you can use your Google account instead. You then enter your company name and click Start using MakeHay.

Answer the setup questions

Setup has seven steps. Click Continue to save a step and move on. On some steps the button names what it saves instead, such as Save and continue. Click Skip this step to leave a step for later, or Back to change an earlier answer.

  • Your work: pick the trades you do, or choose Something else and describe it.
  • Your business: your phone, business email, website and address, and which of them print on your quotes and invoices.
  • Services: what you sell, each with a unit and a price. Tap a suggestion for your trade to add it.
  • Weather: say whether the weather affects your work. If it does, set the limits a job can't be worked in and attach them to your services.
  • Follow-ups: turn on quote follow-ups, overdue invoice reminders, visit reminders and review requests. Review requests can only be turned on once Stripe is connected.
  • Request form: the form customers fill in to ask you for work.
  • Extras: links, each opening in a new tab, to connect payments, put your form on your website, invite your team and import customers.

Click Finish setup on the last step. Then click Send your first quote, or Go to the dashboard.

Good to know: To stop early, click Skip setup, I'll do this later at the bottom of any step. Your Dashboard then lists what's left. See Finish setting up from your Dashboard.

Tip: You can change these answers later: business details in Settings › Company, services and weather rules in Settings › Services, follow-ups under Automations, and your form in Settings › Request forms.
