Invoices and payments

See how your customer pays an invoice online

What your customer sees when they open an invoice link, how card and bank payments work, and when the invoice shows as paid.

Your customer gets a link to their copy of the invoice. They don't need a login.

  1. Step 1: They open the link and see the invoice with your company details.
  2. Step 2: They click the pay button, which shows the balance, like Pay $250.00 online.
  3. Step 3: Stripe's secure checkout opens, and they pay by card or from their bank account.
  4. Step 4: If the invoice has an email address, they get a receipt by email once the payment goes through.

What you see

  • Viewed next to the invoice status means your customer has opened the link.
  • A card payment shows on the invoice as soon as Stripe confirms it, and the invoice moves to Paid.
  • A bank payment shows as Processing first. It typically takes 4 business days to clear, and you can't record another payment on that invoice until it does.
  • If a bank payment fails, you get an email and the invoice stays open.
  • With the Invoice paid online notification on, you're told when a payment settles. See Choose your notifications.

Good to know: Online, your customer always pays the whole remaining balance. For a part payment by check or cash, record it yourself.

Good to know: Without Stripe connected, the link shows your Remit-to instructions under Pay by check, or asks your customer to contact you. See Connect Stripe to take payments.

Tip: Click Preview as client on any invoice to see your customer's copy. The pay button there is turned off, so nothing can be charged.
