Import customers from a spreadsheet
Bring your customer list into MakeHay from a CSV file, with their contacts and job sites, in one pass.

- People with the Import customers permission
The importer reads a CSV file and creates customers, contacts and job sites in one pass.
- Step 1: Save your list as a CSV file. Excel and Google Sheets can both save a sheet as CSV. A CSV export from another app works too.
- Step 2: Open Customers and click Import. On a phone the button shows only its icon.
- Step 3: Drop the file on the box, or tap the box to choose it. Up to 2,000 rows at a time.
- Step 4: Check the column matches. MakeHay guesses each one from your headers, and you can change any guess.
- Step 5: Make sure Customer / company name is matched, or match the contact's name columns and they're used instead.
- Step 6: Check the preview, then click the import button under it, such as Import 120 rows.
- Step 7: When you see Import complete, read the summary and click View customers.
How rows become customers
- Use one row per job site. Rows with the same customer name become one customer with several sites. A repeated address for the same customer is skipped.
- A name matching a customer you already have adds to that customer instead of making a duplicate.
- A job site needs a street, city, state and ZIP. Without all four, the customer comes in without that site.
- Each customer gets at most one contact: the first of their rows with a contact name, email or phone.
- Job site name labels the site. Without it, the street address is the label.
- An email address that isn't valid is left off.
Good to know: Skipped rows are listed with their spreadsheet row number and the reason. Split a file over 2,000 rows and import each part.
