Add a discount or sales tax
Take a percent or dollar amount off a quote, charge sales tax, and see where an invoice gets its discount and tax rate.
- Who can do this
- People with the Create & edit quotes permission. On invoices, Create & edit invoices.
Both live in Totals in the quote builder. A discount comes off the subtotal before tax, so tax is charged on the lower amount.
Give a discount on a quote
- Step 1: In the quote builder, find Discount in Totals and click Add.
- Step 2: Choose % off or $ off and type the amount.
- Step 3: If you like, type a reason in Reason your customer sees (optional).
- Step 4: Click Save, Preview or Save & send. The discount doesn't save as you type.
Your customer sees a Discount line under the subtotal, with the percent if you used one and your reason under it. To remove it, turn off the switch next to Discount and click Save.
Charge sales tax on a quote
New quotes start with the Default tax rate (%) from Settings › Company, so Tax is already on if you've set one. Type a different rate in the box next to Tax to change it on this quote, or turn off its switch to charge no tax. If Tax shows Add, click it and type the rate. Tax saves on its own.
On an invoice
- An invoice made from an approved quote keeps the quote's discount, its reason and its tax rate.
- An invoice you start any other way uses your Default tax rate (%).
- To add a discount, click Add discount under the subtotal. On a draft, click the pencil next to the line items first. Choose % or $, type the amount and, if you like, a reason your customer sees. On a draft, finish with Save line items.
Good to know: There's no tax control on the invoice itself. It uses the rate from the quote or your default. A repeating service that bills after each visit has its own Charge sales tax box. See Set up a recurring service.
Tip: A deposit paid when the quote was approved isn't a discount. It shows as Deposit received under the invoice total, after tax.
