How much does a contractor website cost? On October 17, 2026 the do-it-yourself builders' own pricing pages read like this: Squarespace's Basic plan at $25 a month, or $19 a month on its Pay annually toggle; Wix's page showing prices that vary by location, so no Wix figure is quoted; WordPress.com's Personal plan at US$4 a month billed every 12 months and its Business plan at US$25. A .com costs $11.08 a year at a registrar that charges the same to register and to renew, and the certificate behind HTTPS is free. The part no pricing page shows is the labor: yours, a designer's, or a service's.
What you pay for when you buy a contractor website
Every website, whoever builds it, is the same six parts. Price each one and the total stops being a mystery.
- The domain: the name people type. Bought by the year from a registrar, or included for the first year by a builder and renewed after that.
- Hosting: the computer that serves the pages. Builders include it; a designer either includes it or hands you a hosting bill.
- HTTPS: the padlock in the address bar. Let's Encrypt issues the certificates behind it free, so a host that charges for one is charging for convenience.
- The build: the pages, the words, the layout. The biggest cost, paid in your hours or someone else's.
- Photos: your own jobs, from your phone, before and after. A stock photo shows a lot nobody on your crew striped; your own costs a minute at the end of each job.
- Updates: a new service, a new town, new hours, a price change. The cost that outlives the launch.
A Google Business Profile is off the list because it is free, per Google's own page, and is not a website. The profile is the listing; the site is what backs it up when someone taps through.
Website builder pricing: Squarespace, Wix and WordPress.com
Three builders' pricing pages were opened on October 17, 2026; the figures are what they showed, with the billing term each page states. Builders change prices, so check the page before you buy.
Squarespace
Squarespace lists two prices per plan under a Pay annually and Pay monthly toggle: Basic $25 a month and $19 a month, Core $39 and $29, with Plus and Advanced above, each card with a 20 percent off badge under a headline that says paying annually saves up to 36 percent. A plan bought for an annual term includes one year of free domain registration; the footnote says that domain then renews at Squarespace's standard rate plus applicable taxes.
Wix
Wix's page shows prices that vary by location. Opened for this post, it printed its plan prices beside the words Price includes GST, a tax the United States does not charge, under a note that prices and currency vary by location and USD prices are for reference only. So no Wix figure is quoted here; open the page and read the price it shows you. What it does state: displayed prices are for yearly terms paid in full at purchase, taxes depend on your billing address, each paid plan lists a free domain for one year as a voucher the FAQ says is redeemable within 60 days of purchase, and a free plan is listed with no card required.
WordPress.com
WordPress.com prints the term under every price: Personal US$9 a month billed every month or US$4 a month billed every 12 months; Business US$40 or US$25; Premium and Commerce either side, all excluding taxes, with two and three year terms cheaper still. A free plan is listed at US$0 with no expiration date. The free domain for one year comes with the annual plans; the FAQ says monthly plans do not include it.
GoDaddy's builder pricing page would not load for this post, so it is left out.
Domain name cost per year: register it in your own name
Porkbun's domain page, opened the same day, lists .com at $11.08 to register, $11.08 to renew and $11.08 to transfer, .net at $12.52 for all three, and .org at $7.98 for the first year on sale with $11.84 to renew; prices are per year and include ICANN and other fees. Cloudflare Registrar publishes no table on its product page but states that it does not mark up domain prices at all, and that registration, transfer and renewal prices are always at or below what registries and ICANN charge it.
Two habits save money and grief. Register the domain in your own name at a registrar, not inside a builder or under a designer's account, so the name survives a change of builder or a falling-out. And read the renewal column before the first-year column: Porkbun's .org sale price covers one year, and the renewal is what you pay every year after.
Tip: Set the domain to renew on its own and put the date on the calendar anyway. A lapsed domain takes the website and the email on it down together.
Hiring a web designer: what the quote has to spell out
No credible survey of freelancer or agency prices for contractor sites was found on an HTML page, so no range is given here. What can be sourced is the labor behind a quote: the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for web developers and digital designers at $47.85 an hour, $99,520 a year, for May 2025. A freelancer's rate also covers overhead, unbillable hours and profit, so expect a rate above the wage figure, times the hours the job takes. Ask for the hours, and ask the quote to spell out:
- Who registers the domain, and in whose name.
- Where the site is hosted, what the hosting costs on its own, and whether you can move it.
- How many pages, which ones, and whether a page per service and per town is in the price.
- Who writes the words, who takes the photos, and what a change costs after launch.
- A request form that emails you, or better, lands in the tool you quote from.
Photos and updates: the costs no pricing page shows
The photo budget is your phone: shoot the finished job from the same spot as the before, in daylight. The update budget is the hours a year the site needs to stay true: new services, new towns, new hours, a price. A site nobody updates tells a customer the business might be gone, so count those hours before choosing who builds it.
A done-for-you website built from your CRM
MakeHay's Website add-on is $197 a month or $1,970 a year. A person at MakeHay builds the site from your account, a short questionnaire and your photos, usually with a first version within 1 to 2 business days: a page per service and per town served, hosting and HTTPS included, and the contact page is your request form, so a lead lands in Requests with its photos and address. A domain is free for the first year, connected or bought in your name; from the second year a domain bought through MakeHay renews at the registrar's yearly price. After the first version the editor is yours. If the add-on ends, the site stays up 14 days and a bought domain stays yours.
Every option side by side
| Option | Published price | Domain | Who does the work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squarespace Basic | $25 a month, or $19 a month on the Pay annually toggle | Free for one year on an annual term, then the standard rate | You |
| Wix Light | Varies by location; the page prices yearly terms paid in full and shows USD for reference only | Free for one year, by voucher | You |
| WordPress.com Personal | US$9 a month billed monthly, or US$4 a month billed every 12 months | Free for one year on annual plans | You |
| WordPress.com Business | US$40 a month billed monthly, or US$25 a month billed every 12 months | Free for one year on annual plans | You |
| A .com at Porkbun, no site yet | $11.08 a year to register, the same to renew | That is the domain | Nobody yet |
| A freelancer or agency | Hours times a rate; the median designer wage is $47.85 an hour before overhead and profit | Ask who registers it | The designer, then whoever updates it |
| MakeHay Website add-on | $197 a month or $1,970 a year (pricing) | Free the first year, then the registrar's yearly price | A person at MakeHay, then you in the editor |
Worked example: Two years of a site: a builder and your evenings, or the add-on
- Builder, year one: Squarespace Basic on the annual toggle, $19 × 12 = $228, plus a .com registered in your own name at Porkbun, $11.08, for $239.08.
- Builder, year two: the same $228 plus the $11.08 renewal, $239.08 again, for $478.16 across two years, plus every hour spent building and updating it.
- Add-on, year one: the Website add-on at $1,970 paid yearly, the domain's first year included.
- Add-on, year two: $1,970 plus the domain at the registrar's yearly price; if that price matched Porkbun's .com renewal, $11.08, the year is $1,981.08 and the two years $3,951.08.
Result: About $478 over two years when you do the work, about $3,951 when a person builds it and the leads land in the tool you quote from. The gap, roughly $3,473, is what your hours and the request form are worth to you.
Which one for a two-truck crew
Pick by the hours, not the sticker. If evenings at a laptop are available and the site will be kept current, a builder at US$4 to $25 a month on the pages checked is the cheapest cash, and the domain in your own name is the one thing to get right. If the hours are not there, pay someone, and pay for the request form that drops the lead where you quote; one job the site brings in that would otherwise have been missed pays for many months of it. Either way, decide the pages first: what pages a contractor website needs.
FAQ
What hidden website costs catch contractors?
Four show up on the pricing pages themselves. The domain renewal after the free first year: Squarespace's footnote says a promotional domain renews at its standard rate plus taxes. The monthly price when you skip the annual term: WordPress.com's Business plan is US$40 a month billed monthly against US$25 billed every 12 months. Taxes, which WordPress.com excludes from every price and Wix says depend on your billing address. And the one no page prints: your hours.
Can a contractor get a website for free?
Parts of it. WordPress.com lists a free plan at US$0 with no expiration date and Wix lists a free plan with no card required; a Google Business Profile is free; the certificate for HTTPS is free from Let's Encrypt. The domain is the part that costs money every year, and the builders put the free domain on the paid annual plans, not the free ones.
How much does a .com cost to renew?
At Porkbun, $11.08 a year, the same as registration and transfer, with ICANN fees included; .net renews at $12.52 and .org at $11.84. Cloudflare Registrar says its renewal prices are at or below what the registries and ICANN charge it, with no markup.
Is it cheaper to pay a website builder monthly or yearly?
Yearly, on every page checked. Squarespace shows $25 a month or $19 on its annual toggle for Basic, and its free domain comes only with an annual term; WordPress.com's Personal plan is US$9 a month billed monthly or US$4 billed every 12 months; Wix prices its page on yearly terms paid in full. Monthly makes sense only to try a builder before committing to a year.
