MakeHay is the software that service businesses such as sealcoaters, line stripers and pavers use to quote, schedule and invoice their work. When a business you hired uses MakeHay, MakeHay can send you short text messages about that work from its toll-free number. MakeHay is the sender of every text and writes every text from a fixed set of templates; the business cannot write a text or send one on its own. Nothing is ever texted to you until you agree yourself, in one of the two ways below.
How you agree
- On the business’s request form.Under the phone field is an unticked box that reads “Text me updates from MakeHay about my request with [the business]. Message frequency varies, message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.” Ticking it is your agreement, and MakeHay records the time.
- By replying YES.The business can ask MakeHay to invite you. You get one text like the one below, and nothing else until you reply YES. If you don’t answer, no texts follow.
MakeHay: Peak Sealcoat wants to text you about your quotes, invoices and visits. Reply YES to agree. Msg&data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out.
When you reply YES, MakeHay confirms once:
MakeHay: Peak Sealcoat will now text you about your quotes, invoices and visits. Msg freq varies. Msg&data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out.
Nobody at the business can mark you as agreed. If you never ticked the box or replied YES and you get a text from this number, reply STOP and tell us.
What the texts say
Every text starts with “MakeHay:”, names the business, is one short message, and ends with how to opt out. These are all of them, with an example business:

There are no marketing texts, no free-form texts, and no texts sent by the business itself. Message frequency varies with the work the business does for you: typically one text when a quote or invoice is sent, a reminder if it goes unanswered, and one the day before a scheduled visit.
How to stop
- Reply STOP to any text. Texts to your number end at once, from every business on MakeHay. You get one message confirming that.
- Reply START to allow texts again.
- Reply HELP for a short note saying who sends the texts and how to stop.
- Ask the business to turn texts off for you. They can do that from your record at any time.
The number is outbound only. Any reply other than YES, STOP, START or HELP is discarded, not read, stored or forwarded; to reach the business, use the phone number or email on your quote or invoice.
The fine print
Message and data rates may apply. MakeHay stores your mobile number, how and when you agreed, when it invited you, each text sent and its delivery status, and your YES, STOP, START and HELP replies, as described in the Privacy Policy. Your number is never used for marketing and never shared with anyone but the carrier that delivers the message. The business’s obligations are in the Terms of Service. Questions: support@makehay.io.
